Wilbert Lee Hancock of Dove Creek CO was born to W.O. (Bill) and Mary Ohnick Hancock in Richards CO on November 2, 1926. Wilbert lived in Richards until age 12, then moved with his family to Dove Creek CO in 1938. While attending school in Dove Creek he helped his father work on their farm. In 1943 his family moved to Cortez CO. He spent his junior and senior years at Cortez High School where he was a varsity basketball player. He graduated high school in 1944. After graduation, he joined the United States Army in which he served until January 1947. In August of that same year he married Barbara Conn, and to that union was born a daughter, Carol, and a son, Tom.

Wilbert farmed and mined until his retirement in 1981, after which he spent his time fishing, golfing, and enjoying his family.

Wilbert departed this life July 23,1996. Preceding him in death were his mother and father, one brother, Grover, and two infant sisters.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Dove Creek, daughter Carol (Rob) Mellott of Plesant View CO; son Tom (Lana) Hancock of Dove Creek; three grandsons, Jon and Rusty Sanders, and Garrett Hancock ; two granddaughters, Heather Sanders and Cheyenne Hancock of Dove Creek. He left behind his brothers, Robert Hancock of Wickenberg AZ, Ivan Hancock of Peoria AZ, Allen Hancock, and Lester Hancock of Dove Creek, and sisters Betty Jones of Redmond WA and Dorothy Randolph of Dove Creek. Also left to mourn are numerous nieces and nephews.

He was the wind beneath our wings........

Services were conducted on July 27, 1996 at 10:00 am with burial at the Dove Creek Cemetery.
