A graveside service for Lillian Elizabeth (Stromer) Axelson of Bellingham will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, with the Rev. John Verbarendse officiating.

Mrs. Axelson died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Orchard Park Assisted Living & Retirement Community. She was 84.

Born Dec. 30, 1915, to Herman and Anna (Placke) Stromer in Hastings, Neb., she later moved to St. Louis and then Gary, Ind.

Mrs. Axelson worked as a juvenile officer for the Gary Police Department. She also was active in politics.

She married Clifford Axelson, and they lived in Seattle. They later retired to Camano Island, where they were active in the establishment of Camano Island Country Club. He died in 1986.

Mrs. Axelson then moved to Merrill Gardens in Stanwood, where she lived until she moved to Bellingham in October 1999.

Mrs. Axelson was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Hastings and attended United Methodist Church of Stanwood. She also was active in the Camano Island and Stanwood communities, where she supported many charitable programs.

Her interests included church functions and a ladies bridge club.

Her sisters Gladys Burkhardt and Delores Syre and brother Raymond Stromer died previously.

Survivors include stepdaughter Jeanette Holman of Costa Mesa, Calif. sons Donald Axelson of Edmonds, Richard Axelson of Ketchikan, Alaska, and David Axelson of Hawaii brothers Melvin Stromer and Gary Grim, both of Bellingham, and Herman Stromer of Lynden and many stepgrandchildren and other relatives.
