Nicholas C. Blauvelt Obituary

Nicholas C. Blauvelt, a well-known citizen of Rockland County, died at his home in Spring Valley, on Monday of heart failure.
Mr. Blauvelt was born in Clarkstown, near Spring Valley, on July 22, 1814. He attended school in this county until ten years of age, when he was taken to New York City by his parents. There he attended private schools, and at the age of thirteen he entered Rutgers College. He graduated from that college in 1833, at the age of nineteen years. He began to study medicine with Dr. J. O. Polhemus, father of Dr. Polhemus of Nyack, but afterward gave that up.
In 1837 he was bookkeeper in the Merchant's Bank, New York. After that he taught school until 1841.
In 1846, Mr. Blauvelt ran for Congress on the Democratic ticket, but there was a division in the Democratic Party that year, resulting in the nomination of two tickets, and Mr. Blauvelt was defeated. In 1852, he was elected Member of Assembly, and was made a member of the Committee on Colleges and Common Schools. In 1853, he established a mercantile business at Spring Valley, and in 1864 he sold it to his sons, Abraham D and John D. Blauvelt.
In 1855, Mr. Blauvelt was elected Supervisor of the town of Ramapo, and he was re-elected the next year. After that he was Clerk of the Board of Supervisors for fifteen years. Mr. Blauvelt was Superintendent of Schools in Rockland County, and after that office was abolished, he was twice elected School Commissioner of the County.
Since Mr. Blauvelt sold his business in 1864, he has not been actively engaged in any kind of business. He was much respected by everyone.
Mr. Blauvelt was married three times. His first wife was Mary A., daughter of Abram J Demarest; his second, Maria, daughter of Peter Demarest, and his third, Lavinia, widow of Isaac Conklin, who survives him. He is also survived by the following children: Ellen, widow of Dr. M Davenport; John D Blauvelt, of Nyack; Serena, wife of Abram Sherwood, of Paterson, and Lizzie, wife of Outwater Hutton.
