"Capt Buffum lived in Richmond for awhile after his marriage and then removed to West Swanzey, N.H. and engaged in manufacturing furniture. In 1862 he enlisted in the 16th N.H. regiment and was promoted to the captaincy of Co. I., and served under General Banks in the Louisiana campaign. He was placed in command of a brigade in the retreat from Port Hudson. He died of disease while in active service and his body was brought to Richmond for burial."
