Karen Hungate, age 57, went to her glory on Feb. 5, 2008, after a courageous struggle with ovarian cancer. She was born May 9, 1950, in Manhattan, Kansas to Robert and Jean Bohannon. Karen graduated from Manhattan High School in the Class of 1968.
She received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Kansas State University. Karen taught elementary education for 36 years in Kansas, Colorado, and North Carolina. The last nine years she taught at Ayden Elementary School in Ayden. Karen was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Simpson where she was active in several ministries. Her church family was a vital part of her life.
Karen is survived by her husband, Scott; her daughters, Maria and Anne Stuart; her sons, Scott, Matthew and Jonathan; her father, Robert and his wife, Judy; her sister, Ellen; her mother-in-law, Nell Hungate and her husband, Lloyd.
Karen will be forever remembered as a shining light to her pupils, friends and loved ones. She brought joy and love to all she knew. She made a real difference.
A memorial service will be held in celebration of her life at 3:00 p.m., Saturday Feb. 9, 2008, at Salem United Methodist Church in Simpson. In lieu of flowers, children's books may be donated to the Ayden Elementary School Library in her memory. Karen and her family wish to thank her doctors, nurses and University Hospice for extraordinary, loving care during her illness.
