Gertrude Mary (Zabrocki) O'Connor, 93, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Caslen Living Center surrounded by family.

A Vigil remembrance of Gert's life will be held Monday, April 28, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Mary's, 511 South F Street with a reception luncheon to follow.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Livingston, MT.

Gert was born November 10, 1920, the 3rd child of Julius and Maryanna (Begger) Zabrocki in Wibaux, MT. Gert grew up speaking Polish at home, learning English through her education at schools in St. Phillip and Wibaux. She worked for room and board in Wibaux to attend high school and graduated with the Class of 1939. At a St. Patrick's Day celebration, Gert met her dance partner and future husband, Frank.

On May 1, 1939, Gertrude married Francis J. O'Connor in a Catholic ceremony in Wibaux. Gert and Frank farmed and started their family in Wibaux, working beside each other in all areas of making a home and living. Their days were filled with raising children, animals and crops, drawing from their combined resources. In 1948 the growing family moved to Whitehall, MT to care for Frank's father, William, and then to Livingston, MT in 1949.

In Livingston, Gert was a homemaker first, but took on many different jobs to supplement the family income. She was a skilled seamstress, sewing many of her family's clothing, often from her own patterns. She made many formals, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, coats and shirts, as well as alterations for several local businesses. She worked as a waitress, Welcome Wagon hostess and Fuller Brush representative. Her favorite job was working as a grocery clerk at the Dairy Store, where she made life-long friends.

Gert had been an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, TOPS, Park County Pioneer Society and the Senior Center. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, fishing, playing pinochle and bingo. She loved spending time with friends made through her neighborhood, church, work and clubs.

Gert is survived by her sister, Lorraine Freeman; sons, Donald (Donna) O'Connor, Greg (Leda) O'Connor, Bill (Sue) O'Connor; daughters, Mary Ann (Larry) Bizjack, June O'Connor, Kathy O'Connor, and Peggy O'Connor Tate (Mike); sister-in-law, Clara Zabrocki and brother-in-law, Herb Sturm; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gert loved bragging about her 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and expressed how important being around family was to her.

Gert was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Francis O'Connor; brother, Harry Zabrocki; sisters, Rena Parker, Tekla Sturm; and her special friend and partner of 18 years, Hank Klasen.

Special thanks is extended to caregivers at Caslen Living Center, Rocky Mountain Hospice, Livingston Memorial Hospital Staff, Dr. Dennis Noteboom and Dr.Ted Scofield for their compassionate care over the years.

If desired, memorial donations may be made in Gert's name to St. Mary's Catholic School, 511 South F Street, Livingston, MT 59047, or Park County Senior Center C/O Brooke Cottongin, 202 S. Main St. Livingston, MT 59047.
