From the writings of daughter-in-law Ella Rattenborg Rasmussen and Audubon County Death Records:
Nickoline Hansen was born on 27 October 1870, at Ringe Station, Fyn, (near Odense) Denmark, to Nels Hansen, her mother's name is unknown. She immigrated to Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa, United States in 1890 with Hans Peter Rasmussen. When she saw the mud streets in Atlantic, she said, "So, this is America."

Hans married Nickoline in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa. Hans and Nickoline were the parents of two babies who died in infancy, and seven who reached adulthood. Those seven were: Agnes, born 17 July 1894, died 21 May 1912; Carl Nicholas, born 12 August 1896; Noble Adolph, born 9 August 1898, died 1 Apr 1987 Santa Cruz CA; Anna, born 5 October 1900; Theodore Peter, born 7 January 1903, died 14 Feb 1989, all these were born on Pine Street in Atlantic, IA; Hans, born 8 August 1905; and Ernest, born 31 October 1909, died 11 July 2002.

Tragedy struck the family when Agnes died 21 May 1912 at age 18 years. Then on 14 July 1912, Hans Peter Rasmussen died in a hospital in West Virginia due to a blood clot in his head. Hans had been accidentally struck in the head by carpenters with a large beam in the building that he was working on Main Street in Atlantic, Iowa.

This was a very sad time for Nickoline and her six children. Carl worked at Bernies Grocery Store to provide food. Nickoline raised a large garden which included grapes and fruit trees. She also raised chickens. The family raised, trained, and sold Airdale dogs and did not accepted charity. Anna stayed at home, finished 8th grade, married Hans Aagaard and worked as a telephone operator. Noble worked at Hamilton Dairy, taking care of cows and delivering milk. He married in 1923 and moved to California in 1940. Ted, age 8, and Hans, age 5, were taken to George Thygesen's farm for the first summer. Ted later worked for the Jens Clemsen family, and the Martin and Minnie Clemsen family. While with this family, Ted was confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Kimballton, Audubon County, IA.

Nickoline lived in her home alone after Ted and Hans were married, and Ernest graduated from Coe College. She enjoyed a trip to North Shore Resort, which Ted and Ella owned at Ten Mile Lake, Minnesota. Nickoline flew to Ernest Rasmussen's home in Davenport, Iowa for a visit. She also flew to Pacific Grove, California to visit her daughter Anna Rasmussen Aagaard.

Nickoline died at the Friendship home in Audubon, Iowa where she had resided for 3 months, on 2 December 1959. She was 89 years old. Her address before going to the Friendship Home was West 5th St, Atlantic, IA. The cause of her death was uremia, bilateral Staghorn Renal Calcull--Dr. R. L. Bartley. The informant of her death was Hans Rasmussen (son). She was buried 3 December 1959 in Atlantic Cemetery, Atlantic, Cass Co., IA and is buried foot-to-foot in the plot with her son Carl (Sec 7 lot 270), as very little space was left in the plot with her two infants, Agnes, and husband (Sec 2 Lot 157).
