Neil graduated from Walker County High School in Jasper, Alabama and was working at Fort McClellan when he enlisted in the Army on April 8, 1941. He later trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia and Camp Blanding, Florida before being shipped out into the Pacific Theater.
PVT Boteler perished during the Guadalcanal Campaign while serving with his brothers in U.S. Army's 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. (Possibly in the "Battle of the Gifu", see Wikipedia's Battle of Mount Austen, the Galloping Horse, and the Sea Horse.)
Left to survive Neil were his parents and five siblings.
Awards include:
Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
PVT Boteler's name is permanently inscribed among the "Walls of the Missing" in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines (56774808, a cenotaph).
Neil also had two brothers who fought in World War II; Paul Densmore Boteler who served in the European Theater and was wounded in Germany, and David Foster Boteler who served in the South Pacific.
