James was born in Quail Texas to Floyd and Glennis Daves. He moved with his family to Dove Creek Colorado, when he was 4 1/2. He was raised and educated in Dove Creek, graduating from Dove Creek High School on May 28, 1954.
James was very active in sports: lettering in football and making All-Conference as a fullback. He played baseball as a pitcher and first baseman with his favorite sport being basketball.
On August 18, 1955 James married Imogene Wells in a double ring ceremony with best friends, Orville and Arveta Lewis.
James choose to be a farmer at an early age and he and Imogene operated J.H.Daves Farms for 49 years. He was well known by many surrounding communities for his knowledge and abilities. During the winter, James worked at Union Carbide Uranium mine to further provide for his family.
His work and his family were his life which he truly enjoyed. James was known and loved by all.

James is the father of: Rhonda, Rodney, Roger, Rita, Roxie and Becky.
He was the son of: James Floyd Daves 1909/1995 and Glennis Ardena (Atkinson) Daves 1914/1996
Brother to: Marlin, Wayne, Eddie, Woodie, Stanley, Bobbie, Beverly, Nita, Earlene, Kay and Linda
