Deacon Paul George Plantico, 89, Green Bay, Wisconsin was peacefully received into the Lord's loving arms on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014.
Paul was born in 1925, to Caroline Anne (Smongeski) and Reuben Paul Plantico in Manitowoc, WI. He attended St. Luke's Catholic Grade School and graduated from Washington High School in Two Rivers, WI in 1944.
He received a PhD from Marquette University in 1948 and his MA from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1949.
Paul also attended the University of Chicago as a John Hay Fellow in 1962-1963; St. Norbert College (1954, 1973-1974); Arizona State University (1967); Santa Clara University (1968); and the University of North Carolina (1970).
Paul married Lois Marie Belonger in 1950 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Two Rivers. They were together until her death in 1994.
He taught history and coached debate at New London (Wisconsin) High School from 1949 to 1954. Paul was a history teacher, department chair, and debate and forensics director at Green Bay West High School from 1954 until his retirement in 1986.
In 1966, he received the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year Award. Look Magazine placed him on the National Top 5 Teachers Honor Roll of 1967.
In 1974, Paul received a Certificate in Theology from St. Norbert College.
On February 9, 1974, he was ordained a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church by the Most Reverend Aloysius J. Wycislo. He served the Diocese of Green Bay first at St. Agnes Parish from 1974 to 1990 and then at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral from 1990 until his retirement in 2003.
In 2008, Paul moved to Marietta, Georgia to be closer to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his five children, Carolyn and son-in-law, Tom Stoner; Peter and daughter-in-law, Cynthia; Marc and daughter-in-law, LuAnne; Christopher and Paul; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Shirley (Belonger) Mitchell.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; mother and father, Carrie and Reuben Plantico; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Cecilia and Isadore Belonger; brother, Reuben Jr.; sister-in-law, Winifred; and brother-in-law, Wallace Mitchell.
