German Artist, Poet, and Co-Founder of the Cologne Dada Group. Original name Alfred Emanuel Ferdinand Grünwald. He studied law at the University of Oxford from 1912 to 1913 and completed his studies at the University of Bonn. He served as a lieutenant during World War I. After the war he became interested in art, and founded, with Max Ernst, the Cologne Dada group and was the editor of their newsletter "Der Ventilator". He took part in the First International Dada Fair in Berlin in 1920, but shortly thereafter withdrew from artistic life and studied social economics. He also began mountain climbing as a hobby, which lead to his death in an avalanche while climbing in the French Alps.
