Leonard L. Kern INDEPENDENCE, Wis. -
Leonard L. Kern, 63, Independence, died Monday (Dec. 26, 1983) at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born April 5, 1910, in Lidgerwood, N.D., to Joseph and Catherine (Maule) Pieterick-Kern. He married Phyllis Weier Feb. 20, 1943, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence.

He was a World War II Army veteran and a 1951 graduate of the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science. He worked as a funeral director and furniture retailer for M.A. Wiemer and Company, Independence, which he purchased in 1960 and owned and operated until retirement Jan. 1, 1983. He was a member of district, state and national funeral director associations, having served as an officer on the district and state levels.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post 186, Independence.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Kathleen) Dejno, Schaumburg, IL., two sons, Dennis Kern, Madison, Wis., and James Kern, Pittsburg, Penn.; two grandchildren, Gregory and Brian; two half brothers, Joseph Kern, Milwaukee, Wis., and Edward T. Pietrick, Seminole, Fla.; eight half sisters, Agnes Campbell, New Port Richey, Fla., Sue Marsolek, Independence, Mrs. Joe (Gertrude) Riopelle, Long Beach, Calif., Gen Murach, Milwaukee, Mrs. Basil (Catherine) Mish, Milwaukee, Mrs. Sam (Agnes) Robertson, Bradenton, Fla., Mrs. Ed (Elizabeth) Sellner, Lidgerwood, N.D., and Mrs. Ed (Rose) Wacha, Wahpeton, N.D. Three half brothers and one half sister have died.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, the Rev. James Binkowaki officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the Kern-Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary read at 8 p.m.

Military rites will be conducted by Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post 186.
