The last two years of his life were marked by illness and physical pain, and his increasing infirmity prepared his family and friends for the end. Mr. Chambers was born in Somerville, in 1845. Beginning his railroad service with the old Hudson River Railroad Company, in 1862, when a mere youth, he went to the D. L. and W. in 1865, and had therefore completed forty years of the service. In 1872, he was elected secretary and and served until 1875, and was again elected in 1878 and served until 1899, performing during these years the duties of general auditor in addition to those of the secretaryship. In 1899 he became secretary and treasurer of the company.
