Joel married Mary Boyden, also of Conway; their Intention of Marriage was recorded there on May 9, 1806, although the aforementioned genealogy states they were married on October 20, 1805. The birth of their first child, Clarissa, occurred on August 7, 1806 (Conway town records). Seven more children followed: Dennis, Mary Ann, Dickinson, Christina, Joseph Boyden, Martha W., and Priscilla B.
Joel and his family were enumerated at Conway in 1810 and 1820, and he was involved in manufacturing at the time of the latter census. Conway had a cotton mill and broadcloth factory, and the Redfield Genealogy states that Joel was a clothier.
The family moved to Phelps, New York, about 1822—Joel's uncle Elias Dickinson had been an early settler, arriving in 1791 (French's Gazetteer of NYS, 1860)—and his brother Orrin Redfield was the first merchant in Phelps (History of Ontario Co., NY, 1876). Joel's brothers Silas and Ebenezer D. Redfield also preceded him there.
The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 37 (April, 1883) states that early Phelps resident "Joel D. Redfield died 1825, a. 42 yrs"; the Genealogy says that Joel "died October 27, 1825, in his 44th year."
The headstone of "Joel D. Redfield" was broken by the time transcriptions were attempted in 1950; earlier readings were interpretted as "Joel B." and "John D.", with death date of October 17, 1825—age 42 yrs, 4 mos, 15 days. Considering the illegibility of his name, it's not unlikely that the date and age may also be inaccurate.
