Theophilus was the son of Mary Willard & Elijah Grout (who provided patriotic service in Revolutionary War from Charlestown, NH). Theophilus came to Kirby as the first settler in 1792, at the age of 24. The Grout Homestead is along route 2 in Kirby (the prior Rustic Brick business property), between the St. Johnsbury and Concord town lines.

He and Joanna had 11 children, conveying the farm to his son Josiah on 5 April 1852.

The family plot is found at the top center of Grove Cemetery with granite steps leading to their resting places.
