U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States with his parents, they settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he worked in his father’s blacksmith shop as a farrier. Entering politics, he was president of the Philadelphia Common Council, (1896-1911), president of the Philadelphia Board of Road Viewers, (1911-16) and recorder of deeds of Philadelphia, (1915-36). He was elected as a Republican to the Seventieth Congress and served from March 4, 1927, until his resignation on October 20, 1927. After leaving Congress, he was chairman of the Republican Central Campaign Committee, (1928-34) and member of the Board of Road Viewers, serving from 1935, until he retired in 1937.
