104 YEARS

Early Life: Rita was born July 3, 1909, to James M. and Laura Crites Dorsett in the family farmhouse outside of Crescent, Iowa. Lots of excitement welcomed Rita into the world, as the next day being the Fourth of July, her older brothers were playing with firecrackers in the barn loft and the hay caught fire, burning the barn to the ground. Rita was the eighth of 10 children (two of whom died very young); she grew up with four sisters and three brothers, all of whom preceded her in death. Rita attended grade school and high school in Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating in 1927. She especially enjoyed being on the girls' rifle team where she earned three medals for sharp shooting. She also excelled at marbles (she beat the boys), volleyball and basketball. Rita's father, a home builder, purchased their first family car, a Model T, when Rita was 14; because he was afraid to drive it, Rita willingly became the driver.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Rita's first job was at Woodward's Candy Factory in Council Bluffs, working in the office, starting at a salary of $7 per week. Upon opening her first pay envelope, she discovered a $10 bill. She went to Mr. Woodward and said she thought he had made a mistake, he asked her what was wrong, she said she was supposed to get $7 but got $10, instead. He smiled and said, "I think you earned it." Rita used a large part of her earnings to help with expenses at home, as times were hard during the Great Depression. In fact, she and Gordon Bauman, her beau since high school, secretly eloped in 1934, when Rita was 25. They told no one, as they both continued to live at their respective homes for an entire year and help out their families with their earnings. In 1936, they got their first apartment together; at that time, her paycheck contained $150 per month. In 1940, the beginning of World War II, their daughter, Judy, was born. Rita and her family moved to Washington state in 1945, to the small town of Cle Elum. There, Rita worked as a bookkeeper for over 20 years at the Cloverleaf Dairy, later Darigold. That first summer, the family lived in a small fire lookout cabin at Salmon la Sac, both spotting forest fires and watching for enemy planes. Rita had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed camping, picking huckleberries, fishing, hunting wild mushrooms, picnicking and boating on the mountain lakes. She helped build their lovely home on a bluff a short distance from Cle Elum. She was a member of Eastern Star and PEO, made many good friends, kept a lovely home and garden, and had a reputation of being a wonderful cook who enjoyed entertaining. After their divorce in 1973, Rita moved to Tacoma and took a job as an assistant apartment complex manager. Though Rita lost her left eye to complications of glaucoma, she lived a healthy and active life and gave much of her time in caring for others. She cared for a dear friend with cancer for two years; she then moved to Iowa and cared for her sister, Ruth for three years until she died. She returned to Tacoma for a short time, and then returned to Iowa and cared for her brother, Albert for six years. She then lived with her daughter and son-in-law 12 years until declining health precluded a move to Discovery Care where she resided for four years. Rita was a loving and exceedingly cherished mother and grandmother. Rita Mildred Bauman, of Hamilton, Montana, was taken to her eternal, joyful reward with the Lord Jesus on Monday, April 28, 2014, at Discovery Care Center in Hamilton, Montana. She was 104 1/2 years old.
