SIDNEY - Richard F. Ayers died April 23, 2014, at Togus Springs after a brief illness. Richard, "Dick," was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Augusta, the son of Julia and Leigh Ayers.
Richard graduated from Cony High School in 1944 and entered the Army shortly after to serve in World War II. Following his service to his country, he entered the Maine State Police Academy, becoming a trooper. His love of cars and their inner workings led him to transfer from driving a cruiser to maintaining the cruisers. Richard retired from the state police as the purchasing agent and supervisor of maintenance for all police cruisers and mechanics.
Dick was a member of the Sidney Masonic Lodge and the Kora Temple Shrine. He was the first president of the North Augusta Trailblazers, and enjoyed snowmobiling for the last 50 years. He spent many memorable weekends at his camp on Long Pond in Rome and the camp he shared on Long Pond in Rangeley. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cribbage with family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, which led him to all parts of the state and beyond pursuing these passions. He enjoyed camping with family and friends and spent many hours sitting around the campfire.
Richard was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Arlene; his brother, Roger Ayers; and his sisters, Joyce Ayers and Eleanor Small.
He is survived by his son, Edwin Ayers and wife Brenda; four daughters, Pam McCutcheon and husband Ray, Beverly Pare and husband Paul, Joyce Smith and husband Dan, and Sue Beaudoin and husband Jeff; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private service will be at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Chapel, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, please consider a random act of kindness in his memory. (Morning Sentinel 5/2/2014)
