The VA headstone application submitted by Dr. E. H. Jones in 1933 has an annotation of prior service by John Jones in the 3rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry. This regiment of the Spanish American War was composed of African Americans serving under white officers. It was mustered into service in Mobile, Alabama in June 1898 and stationed at Anniston in October 1898, mustering out there on March 20, 1899. Pvt. John Jones was listed on the B Company roster along with three sergeants and seven other privates from Talladega. The 25th U. S. Infantry Regiment was a racially segregated unit, known to the Plains Indians as "Buffalo Soldiers", who also served in the Spanish American War and Philippine American War of 1899-1902.
