Dates are as per the Armstrong family Bible.

Alfred—the seventh of 10 children born to Isaac and Roxalana (Hovey) Armstrong—was born in the Finger Lakes farming community of Benton, New York, a few years after his parents' relocation westward from Saratoga County.

In November 1847, at 28, he married sixteen-year-old Jane Elizabeth (she answered to either given name), a daughter of James and Nancy (Lanning) McIntyre of Avoca, Steuben County, New York—the Armstrong family having moved there several years earlier.

Alfred, his wife and first-born child Edwin were amongst the clan living on his folks’ farm in Avoca in 1850. Within a few years Alfred relocated his family to adjacent Allegany County, throughout which they moved as employment dictated. Labor opportunities eventually enabled the purchase of a home in Wellsville, and the couple remained village residents for the rest of their days.

Five boys and a girl were born to the Armstrongs, although only three sons reached adulthood and married: William Martin (he favored his middle name); George Henry, who married a first cousin; and Charles A., who left no biological descendants and predeceased his father by just six weeks.

In later years, Alfred pared back his agricultural chores to that of a gardener and shared his village home with family, having been widowed in 1880. He passed away there in 1902, one month shy of his 83rd birthday. Alfred's estate was bequeathed to his two sons and their wives, and survivors also included four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his sister Martha Polmateer.
