Minnie Meacham Carter, 93, widow of Amon G. Carter Sr., former owner and publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, died Saturday at home.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials: Performing Arts Center of Fort Worth, Amon Carter Museum of Western Art or the James L West Presbyterian Care Center.
Mrs Carter was born Sept 301902, in Huntsville. When she was a young child her family moved to Fort Worth, where she lived the rest of her life. She was the daughter of H.C. Meacham, mayor of Fort Worth from 1925 to 1927 and the first mayor under the city manager form of government. Fort Worth Meacham Airport was named after H.C. Meacham who was instrumental in its establishment. Mrs. Carter's mother was Margaret Bean Meacham and the center of the Junior Woman's Club was named Margaret Meacham Hall in her honor.
Minnie Carter was a buyer for Meacham's Department Store, which was founded by H.C. Meacham in the 1920s. Meacham's was on the corner of 5th and Houston streets in downtown Fort Worth, and was thought of as the finest department store in Fort Worth during its time. The entire Meacham family participated in the store's operation.
Mrs Carter was a 1923 Assembly debutante and the queen of the Fat Stock Show during the years when the Fort Worth Rodeo and Fat Stock Show, had a queen and a court.
She was devoted to her late husband and dedicated to her community. She was past president of the Fort Worth Garden Club, a lifetime member of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth and extremely active In the Fort Worth Opera Association. On numerous occasions, Mrs. Carter opened her home and gardens, to civic groups. She was a member of The Assembly Rivercrest Country Club, the Fort Worth Club and Ridglea Country Club.
Minnie Meacham Carter was preceded in death by her three sisters, Mary Meacham Brants, Margaret Meacham Hightower, and Katherine Meacham.
Survivors: Two nephews, Harry Meacham Brants of Fort Worth and Charles Hightower of Layfayette, La.; three nieces, Marianne Brants McNutt and Lucy Minette Brants, both of Fort Worth, and Lutetia Hightower Raley of Dallas; eight great-nephews, Dr. Allan Meacham Brants of San Antonio, David Mayo Brants of Nashville, Tenn., Michael Burdere Wilson of Austin, Clay Brants Wilson of Fort Worth, Jack Southedand Wilson, David Carl Saustad, and Donald Charles Saustad all of Dallas and James Meacham Hightower of Layfayette La five great-nieces Mary Kayo Juran and Lisa Minette Juran both of Fort Worth Emily Virginia Brants of Japan Jennifer Hightower of Dallas, and Ann Hightower Harrison of Flordia; two great-greatgrandsons; and one great-great- granddaughter.
