Family story
Vern Hornaday, 10 year old son of Henderson Hornaday, came very near being drowned in Whitle Lick Creek near Brooklyn Thursday afternoon of last week. He had gone with his Uncle Charles Hornaday, to Brooklyn and had been told not to go into the creek, but when left alone with some other boys he ventured in and got beyond his depth. He was under water for some time before he could be found by Bedford Cox and some other men, who were fishing near by and who were attracted by the cries of the lads companions. He was taken to the home of his grandmother Mrs. Hale, and Dr. Spoons of Brooklyn was hastly summoned. For a long time it was feared that the lad was beyond recovery, but Dr Spoons finally succeeded in inducing artificial respirations and after a time natural breathing began following sleep lasting until the next day. The boy's father, who recently returned here from California, is seriously sick with lung trouble at the home of his Mother, Mrs. Huldah Hornaday, on East Main Street
