Mrs. Leslie Carlton Dies in California
Prominent Philanthropist Spent Winter in La Jolla
Mrs. Angeline Slothower Carlton, widow of Leslie G. Carlton, died at 10:30 a. m. Thursday in a hospital at La Jolla, Calif., following a brief illness. Mrs. Carlton was spending the winter at her home at La Jolla and had planned to return to Colorado Springs shortly after Easter when her illness occurred. Relatives here where first notified of her illness last Tuesday and the telegram bringing news of her death came Thursday afternoon.
Surviving are her brother, L. C. Slothower, and her three nephews, L. C. Slothower , Jr., 176th Infantry, Fort Benning, Ga; Lt. John Edward Slothower and Ben H. Slothower, both of the Army Air Force. There are also two sisters-in-law, Mrs. A. E. Carlton and Mrs. A. C. Magruder, both of this city.
Born in Wisconsin
Mrs. Carlton was born August 4, 1878, in Gratiot township, Lafayette county, Wis. With her parents she moved to Warren, Ill., in 1884. She attended Warren high school and Warren academy and was graduated from Oberlin college, Oberlin, O. she studied violin at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and here musicianship there won for her and offer of a concert tour. She declined the career of a concert violinist to become the bride of Leslie G. Carlton in 1901. She went to Cripple Creek at the time of her marriage and lived there for 15 years.
In 1916, Mrs. Carlton came to Colorado Springs. She and her husband purchased the property at 1405 N. El Paso St., which was formerly the Country club. They remodeled the building into a home which they named "Dunwanderin."
Mr. Carlton died in September, 1938.
Built Winter Home
About 10 years ago, Mrs. Carlton built a beautiful home, Spanish Hacienda type, at La Jolla, Calif. There she spent the winters.
Mrs. Carlton has always been active in philanthropic and church work of this region. She was a member of the Christian Science church.
Merrill E. Shoup, manager of her business interest, left last Tuesday for La Jolla, but did not reach there before her death.
Funeral plans have not been announced, but burial will be in Colorado Springs.
Lt. John E. Slothower, nephew, is en route here from Texas.
