Upon his retirement Benjamin Chew Tilghman IV and his wife directed a substantial renovation of the Hermitage. As part of this effort they catalogued and donated a unique historically significant collection of Tilghman family papers to the Maryland Historical Society. - The first Tilghman house is believed to have burned down in 1832. The current structure was built in 1859 out of the surviving eastwing of the first house. Much of the material evidence of generations of Tilghmans remains at "The Hermitage," including furniture and portraits. ref: Tilghman family papers Maryland Center For History And Culture. James Tilghman's wife Susanna Steuart died in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., MD and is not found in the burial records.
