George E. Stevens, 77, Bemidji, died Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, Minneapolis. Funeral services were at Calvary Lutheran Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Stevens was born Jan. 5, 1908, at Wadena, the son of Anton and Toletta Stevens. He grew up and attended school at Wadena, then spent four years working in Washington. He returned to Wadena and was a baker there until moving to Bemidji in May 1933. He married Clar Bjerke July 21, 1932, at Bemidji. He worked at the Coca Cola Bottling Co. here and spent seven months in 1942 working at a shipyard in Oakland, Calif. From 1947 to 1952 he owned the Hartz Store in Nymore and from 1952-1955 worked for Amundson Oil Co. in Bemidji. He bought the IGA store on Fourth Street South in 1955 and operated it until retiring in 1972. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and had served on its council and as an officer of Bemidji Moose Club. He also served on the city planning commission and helped in planning the Nymore Beach.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Allen and David, Bemidji, and Delbert, Coon Rapids; a daughter, Colleen (David) Forte, New Brighton; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Johansen, Minneapolis.

He was preceded by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
