Massachusetts Governor, US Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1880 to 1882. He was then elected to represent Massachusetts' 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1883 to 1889. When President William McKinley took officer in 1897, John Davis Long was appointed as Secretary of the Navy in his Cabinet. He served until 1902, and while in office he oversaw the United States Navy's participation in the Spanish-American War, where it saw considerable service.
