The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Geyer) Cooper, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in West Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is in the 1863 draft registration as a resident of Warwick Township. He reportedly married Catharine Summy ca. 1860 and fathered Elizabeth (b. 09/??/61.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of twenty-two in Lancaster County November 3, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 7 as a private with Co. E, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863.

Catharine died on June 10, 1867, and he married Abigail Wileman July 26, 1868, fathering Mary Elizabeth (b. 03/22/69 - married Harry Lincoln Hoover), Anna Rebecca (b. 09/29/70 - married David Gordon), Horace Greeley (b. 10/18/72), John Monroe (b. 06/14/75), Abraham Hackman (b. 10/26/77 or 78), Jacob (b. @1880), Emma Margaret (b. 04/12/82 - married Eue M. Bricker), and William Wilson (b. 07/03/85). By 1880, he was living in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, where he died in Enhaut from a "complication of diseases viz: asthma, bronchitis, dropsy & erysipelas." His obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent claims that at death he was "more than 70 years old."
