Gilbert de Gaunt, Gilbert de Gand

Son of Walter de Gaunt and Maud of Brittany. Grandson of Domesday magnate Gilbert de Gaunt and Stephen, Count of Treguier.

Gilbert was the husband of Rohese de Clare, the daughter of Richard de Clare and Adeliza de la Meschines. They were the parents of only one daughter, Alice, who married Simon III de Senlis.

Gilbert was fighting for King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141 even though he was under twenty years old. In 1149 or 1150, the King made Gilbert the Earl of Lincoln.

Gilbert founded Rufford Abbey. He is buried at St Andrew's in Folkingham.
