Civil War Union Brigadier General. Commanded the 15th New Jersey Infantry, and the First New Jersey Brigade in most of the later Civil War battles in Virginia. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek (October 19, 1864), and was belatedly promoted to Brigadier General in June 1865 after the fighting was over.
