Prior to retirement from the Burlington City School District, she taught for 39 years and served the district as a first grade teacher, District Reading Supervisor and Coordinator of State & Federal Programs.

Among the numerous awards she received were Motivation Award from the black students of Burlington City (1969 and 1972) the Burlington County Community College Award; Burlington City Head Start for dedication to the program; Temple University Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award; and the 1993 NJASCD Award for Outstanding Educator. Within the last few years, she was honored by the Burlington County Branch of the NAACP and the Oliver Cromwell Black History Society, Inc., and the Rancocas Valley Chapter of the Links, Inc.

In Burlington, she was a former member of the Second Baptist Church & belonged to the Wesley AME Zion Church,Marie was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa, the South Jersey Continental Societies, Rancocas Valley Chapter of The Links, Inc. and the Burlington-Willingboro Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Burlington County Community Citizens Advisory Council, the Burlington County Girl Scouts Board of Directors, and the South Jersey Medical Auxiliary and the South Jersey Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Burlington County Community Action Program.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Dr. Allen C. Akins. Survivors are her two daughters, Marion Nance and Audrey Williamson; two sons-in-law, Daryl Nance and Darrin Williamson; four grandchildren, Kyana, Daryl, Darrin and Dalton, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren as well as a host of extended family and friends.
