Joshua was the son of Samuel Ridgway and his wife, Nancy Morgan. He was the third of 11 children. He moved with his family to Ross County, Ohio when he was 2 years and would eventually meet his wife, Sarah Hess Cryder. After they were married, they followed Sarah's uncle and his family to Grundy County Illinois. Joshua and Sarah had two children, Samuel Cryer Ridgway (1830) and Emanuel Cryder Ridgway (1831). Sarah died in 1835, He married Sarah Roderick in the following year, and she gave birth to his daughter, Madura (1836). Joshua died a few years later as the result of an accident while he was working on a canal.
