George married Elizabeth (Oakley) Oakley April 6, 1866, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. Elizabeth's first husband was Thomas Oakley, whom she married June 1, 1848, in Detroit, by H. Morgan. Elizabeth's father was John H. Oakley and her mother was Emeline Westerfield. Both are buried at Tyler Street Cemetery, Van Buren Township, Wayne, Michigan.

George and Elizabeth had a daughter Caroline Amelia, who died as a little girl, age 4, and is buried in Columbus, Ohio at Green Lawn Cemetery. They had my great-great grandmother, Ida Snell, born 10 November 1869, in Columbus, and John H. Snell, born 8 August 1873, in Columbus.

Ida Snell married William James Anderson 5 August 1891, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. She died 4 May 1934 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago.

John H. Snell was killed in an accident, in Chicago, 17 May 1895, and is buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Chicago.

George is on the 1870 federal census twice. He is in Detroit with Elizabeth and the two children and he is in Columbus with Anna B. Grant and her son, Charles, from her first marriage to Oliver S. Gordon. I do not know if George and Anna ever married. He claims that they did, in Kentucky, on his Civil War pension record. The census says they married in 1878. I also do not know if George and Elizabeth ever divorced. Elizabeth died 6 August 1907, and is buried at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Du Page, Illinois. Anna B. Grant Snell is buried at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus.

George was with Sherman throughout the entire Civil War. He took a musket ball in the leg, which caused him pain for the rest of his life. He was a tinner by trade. He lost his arm at Mission Ridge. The record says left arm but this photo indicates it was his right arm.
