Evelyn Ball LeJeune was born in the Bay Ridge Section of Brooklyn, New York on March 16, 1925.
She was the daughter of the late George Saunders Ball of Penn Yan, New York (Finger Lake Region of upstate New York), Brooklyn, New York, and Lafayette, Louisiana and Mary Reyno Ball of Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada, Brooklyn, New York, and Lafayette, Louisiana.
Evelyn graduated from the Visitation Academy of Brooklyn, New York in 1939. It was here at the Visitation Academy, a private Catholic Elementary School for girls whose motto was Live Jesus (Vive Jesus), where the seeds of Evelyn's deep Catholic faith were sown.
While a student at Visitation, Evelyn studied piano and developed a life-long devotion to Saint Anthony of Padau.
Evelyn then attended Fontbonne Hall Academy also located in Brooklyn, and after her graduation from the Manhattan Medical School, she worked briefly in a Doctor's office.
At the time of her marriage on December 3, 1949, to Bernie LeJeune, Evelyn worked as a clerk at Banker's Trust Company in the financial district of New York City.
As a young girl and adult, Evelyn studied dance at the Whitten Dance School of Brooklyn, New York. Her specialties were ballet and exhibition waltzing. She performed several times at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
In 1945, Evelyn was chosen as a preliminary contestant for the title of Miss New York State in the Miss America Pageant of that year. She also vied for the title of Miss Subway.
Evelyn was a very patriotic person, a trait she inherited from her father George Ball. She always flew the American flag on national holidays and possessed a variety of patriotic pins.
During World War II, Evelyn worked as a volunteer at the USO in Brooklyn, New York. In gratitude for her war effort, Evelyn received a Distinguished Service Certificate in recognition and appreciation of loyal and patriotic service given to the National Catholic Community Service of Brooklyn and Long Island, New York. In fact, it was here at the Brooklyn USO where Evelyn met her future husband, Bernie LeJeune from Church Point, Louisiana.
Evelyn and Bernie were married for 62 years. When her husband was transferred from the Boro Hall Post Office in Brooklyn, New York to the Lafayette Main Post Office facility in 1975, Evelyn moved to Lafayette with her husband, daughter and parents.
For a number of years after moving to Lafayette, Evelyn regularly donated blood at the local blood drives earning her membership in the Gallon Club for donating over a gallon of blood.
Evelyn enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, maintaining scrapbooks of family photos, keeping scrapbooks of her famous comic strips (The Family Circus, Frank & Ernest, Beetle Bailey and The Born Loser) and was a great supporter of St. Joseph Indian School in Lakota, ND.
She was an accomplished embroider creating beautiful tablecloths, napkins, place mats, aprons, pillowcases as well as pictures.
Evelyn had a collection of dolls and also enjoyed Precious Moments.
Christmas was a big decorating event for Evelyn. Her famous "Village under the Christmas Tree" continued the tradition started by her parents. Many of the Christmas houses and statues are over 100 years old.
Evelyn was proud of her English heritage, and known for bearing a striking resemblance to Queen Elizabeth of England.
Evelyn will be remembered by her family and friends for her unfailing acts of thoughtfulness and kindness such as telephone calls of concern and the sending of notes, greeting cards and small gifts.
But most of all, she will be remembered by her daughter for her unconditional love and example of being a strong woman of deep faith. Thanks Mom.
