Biography of Charlotte (Swartz) Van Wicklin
________________________________________
Charlotte Swartz was born on November 12, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the first born child of Floyd Swartz and his wife Margaret Agnes Hazelhurst Case. They would go on to have her sister, Helen in 1927, then her brother, Byron in 1930, and then finally they would have Janet in 1935.

During her high school years, she met Dexter Van Wicklin and he would eventually become her date for the senior prom. They got married on February 1, 1944 and went to Chicago for their honeymoon where they were able to enjoy several plays and musicals.
Right after the honeymoon, Dexter was shipped overseas into the Pacific Theater of war. World War II was raging on and being in the Navy, he was ordered to report for duty.

In 1950 they started their family. Their firstborn child was a little girl by the name of Cherie who did not survive infancy. The baby had flu symptoms and passed away before they could get her to a hospital. This was a great tragedy for this family. Charlotte would go on to have five more children: Bonnie, Robin, Frederick, Gary and finally Lorraine.

This group of people really enjoyed their family life together. They built a new house in Farmington and watched the family grow. They also had a boat and took it out almost every weekend. Char was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star.
Charlotte and Dexter enjoyed going to Commodore Balls and had many friends. There was always an event to go to.

After the kids got a little bit older, she went back to work as a school bus driver. Even though her main job was driving kids to school, she also worked at Ye Olde Pub, a bar that her and Dexter owned. Dexter worked as an engineer and knew that, because of automation, that his type of work was becoming obsolete. He knew he had to switch careers and wanted to buy a bar but was hesitant to make such a big change of employment. So Dexter worked as a bartender for five months to see if it was a good fit. Everything worked out well and Dexter purchased Al's Lucky Lounge, which became known as Captain's Cabin, on 8 Mile Road, near Wyoming Ave., in Detroit. The bar was quite profitable so they bought a second one down the street on 8 Mile Road, near Evergreen Ave, in Detroit, which was named Ye Olde Pub. This bar had a good-sized lunch crowd and several dart boards to attract the evening crowd. This bar became real popular and was a local version of the TV show by the name of "Cheers". They even had their own mailman, Eddie, that frequented the place. After Char retired from being a school bus driver it was time to retire from the bar business as well. They, previously sold the Captain's Cabin, and now Ye Olde Pub had to sell. They were pleased that a hamburger company (Rally's) came in and offered cash for the property. So when they sold it, the business deal was concluded. When they sold Captain's Cabin they sold it on land-contract and had to take it back three times before they found someone to purchase it outright. With the bars sold in the early 1990's it was time to enjoy the next chapter of their lives.

In retirement they got a fifth wheel and took it on the road every winter. When the weather would get cold in Michigan, they simply would drive away to where it was warm.

They later purchased a home in Florida in a senior park complex, in Punta Gorda. They really enjoyed their friends down in Florida. Charlotte passed away in a local hospital in Florida and Dexter would move back to their Waterford, MI home where he would pass away a few months later. They were married one day shy of their seventieth anniversary.
