Per the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Samuel, age 32, was living in Lawrence, KS, with his wife Polly Ann Huson, age 30, and daughter Adella Huson, age 8. All were born in New York. In 1862, Samuel served a one year term as the mayor of Lawrence. Samuel was one of the charter members of the Masonic Lodge, Lawrence Chapter, No. 4, R. A. M., which was chartered by the Grand Chapter of Kansas, October 18, 1866. He was a member of a corporation that established a weekly newspaper, "The Standard, Democratic," September 18, 1870; which was sold in October, 1871.
After Samuel and his father Richard, and their families, moved to Kansas, they organized "The Homeopathic Medical Society of the State of Kansas" in Leavenworth, April 14, 1869. Richard served as President 1869-1870. The society was chartered in 1871, and Samuel served as President 1871-1872.
This newspaper report of his death was printed in the "Yates County Chronicle," Pen Yan, New York, January 28, 1875: "From the Dundee Record we learn that Dr. Samuel K. Huson, formerly of Dundee and for many years a citizen of Lawrence, Kansas, died in the latter place on the 2nd inst., at the age of 46 years….His wife was a sister of James Spicer, Esq., of Dundee, and she survives him with two children."
