Donny was born March 24, 1951 in Two Rivers, a son of the late Roy C. and Minnie (Kallander) Gilbert. He attended St. Luke's Grade School, and Washington High School in Two Rivers, graduating with the class of 1971. On May 21, 1993, he married the former Teresa Hedman at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Two Rivers. Donny worked as a machinist for over 35 years at Oil Rite Corp. of Manitowoc. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing solitaire; but especially loved watching his son, Cody, participate in all of his sporting events. Donny was a member of the Lakeshore Knights Car Club, and will be greatly missed by his family, many friends, and his dog, Shawna.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa; his son Cody Gilbert; and step-son, Joshua McDonell, all of Two Rivers. He is further survived by his mother-in-law, Marjorie Barta of Two Rivers; brothers and sisters which include: Virginia, and her partner, Linda of California; Sandra (Leonard) Ouradnik, Mishicot; Gloria (Stephen) Zietlow, Manitowoc; David (Kim) Gilbert, Homer, Alaska; Bette (Dr. Glenn) Popp, Manitowoc; Linda (Ted) Taddy, Two Rivers; Theresa (Brian) Presl, Mishicot; three brothers-in-law, Dave (Connie) Hedman, Two Rivers; Mike (Karen) Hedman, Manitowoc; Lee (Kristy) Hedman, Two Rivers; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a good friend, Gordy Bowen of Two Rivers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Minnie Gilbert; a brother, Dennis Gilbert; and a sister, Mary Ann Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 – 18th St. Two Rivers. Rev. Kay S. Richter will officiate at the service.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. This is not our land; we are but caretakers. What we take from the Earth we must put back. What we put out we get back. We live in God's country and we are proud to call it Home.
