On July 24, 2006, our father, Robert "Bob" Elwood Aberley, passed away in Apple Valley. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elouise, who passed away in January of 2001. He is survived by his sister, Carol (Messinger) of Lafayette; brother, Richard of Pine Grove; son, Douglas of Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada; daughter, Joan (Ferris) of Victorville; and stepson, Randy Amerson of Rome, Ga. Bob was a loving grandfather to Robert Jr., Laura, Christine, Megan and Kelsey, and great-grandfather to Taylor, Lindsey and Kailey. Bob was born in Oakland on March 29, 1926, to Ruth Lorena (Armstrong) and Gaylord Bryan Aberley. He was very proud that his family history in the United States could be traced back to 1777. At 18 years of age, Bob entered the U.S. Navy and served throughout the South Pacific on the attack transport U.S.S. Harris. After the early tragic death of his father in 1947, Robert completed his university education at Cal Berkeley. He married Marjorie (Allison) in June of 1949. In November of 1950, Bob was hired as a junior accountant by Reserve Oil and Gas Company in San Francisco. He remained with Reserve for 30 years, reaching the position of vice president and treasurer in 1973. In 1966, Bob moved his family to Apple Valley when Reserve merged with the Apple Valley Building and Development Company. In 1971, Bob married Elouise Thompson. After Reserve merged with Gett Oil in 1980, he joined JEM Petroleum of Littleton, Colo., and continued his career as a chief financial officer until retirement in 1986. Bob and Elouise retired to Apple Valley where they enjoyed the company of family and many friends. He was a keen investor who developed an encyclopedic knowledge of the stock market. Bob also loved playing golf, and was for many years an active member of the Apple Valley Country Club. Bob's life was marked by the key social events of the last 80 years. His belief in hard work and thrift originated from a childhood in the Great Depression; his sense of duty to his country was forged in World War II; and his commitments to education and professional achievement were born of the post-war optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. Dad, we will never forget the strength of your values, your quiet confidence and your dedication to the family and close friends who you loved. The values that you taught by lifelong example will be passed on for many generations to come. A private family memorial will be held this month. Sunset Hills Mortuary is handling arrangements.
