Former district judge, county attorney dies
Charles Moore Warren, 83, Girard, formerly of Fort Scott, died Monday, Nov. 10 1997, at the Crawford County District Hospital, Girard. He was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Fort Scott, the son of Harry and Marion Alphonsine Warren. He married Ava L. Murphy, March 28, 1943. They were later divorced.
Warren was a 1935 graduate of Fort Scott High School and a 1937 graduate of Fort Scott Community College. While attending there, he was an offensive guard and linebacker for the Greyhound Football team. He was a member of the All-Conference Squad in both seasons.
In basketball, he was an honorable mention All-Conference guard for two years. He also earned recognition in track and tennis. He was the state junior college discus champion in track and played doubles on the tennis team. In 1997, he was inducted into the Fort Scott Community College Hall of Fame.
After graduation from FSCC, Warren continued his football career at the University of Kansas. In 1941, he graduated from the Washburn University School of Law.
For 12 years, he served as Bourbon County Attorney and for 16 years as the Bourbon, Linn and Miami county District Judge. He had served two terms as a member of the Kansas Corporation Commission, in Topeka.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, having served in England and France during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fort Scott; the Bar Association of the State of Kansas, Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Rising Sun Lodge #8 A.F. & A.M., and the Fort Scott Scottish Rite Bodies as a 32nd degree Mason.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a founding member of the Bourbon County BASS club.
Survivors include his loving companion of 22 years, Eileen Sherlock, Girard; two sons, Harry Warren, Lawrence; and David Warren, Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Vanessa Warren, Mark Warren and Jennifer Warren; two sisters, Margaret Classen, Hoisington; and Marion Elizabeth Brown, Bartlesville, Okla; and an aunt, Mildred Sonneman, Fort Scott. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen childs.

Friends and family will meet at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. and leave for the cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Due to Warren being the 1972 Cancer Crusade Chairman, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, and can be left in care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall, Fort Scott.

Pallbearers were Jack Stapleton, John Baker, Blake Hudson, Leigh Hudson, Bill Aldis and Skip Short.
Military rites were provided at the cemetery by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Members of the color guard were Glenn Maupin, Charles Stoner, Maurice Fletcher, Tom Lyons, Wayne Stringer and Calvin Funk.
Members of the gun salute were Elmer Beal, Art Bailey, Paul Pavey, Morris Nelson, Luther Lyons, Albert Eshelbrenner, Ken Jefferson and Art Craig.
The flag was folded by Perry Dobbins, Dean Povenmire and Raymond Pfeiffer, and then presented to his son, Harry Warren, by R.C. Coyan.
Steve Harry played "taps."
Services were under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
