Nathan and Mary lost two of their sons in the Great Boston Fire of 1872. Albert was severely injured and died over a month later. Lewis's body was not found.

As of Friday, December 6, 1872, the Police had a list of nineteen missing persons. The two firemen, Frazier of Cambridge and Abbott of Charlestown, have not been found.
