Betty Patricia Smith was born March 17, 1918 in Seattle, WA to George Thoms Smith and Christian Johnston (Burns) Smith. Her four grandparents were all born in Scotland, and she was proud of her Scottish heritage.

The oldest of three sisters, she was raised in Tacoma, WA and Bellingham, WA.

She graduated from Bellingham High School in 1937.

She attended a year of pre-nursing classes at Western Washington University before entering nursing training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham. Graduating in 1941, her first job was as a night nurse of a maternity ward in Bremerton, WA.

In 1944, after returning to school on a full scholarship, she graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Nursing Education and a certificate in Public Health Nursing. She was a supervisor in the Seattle Public Health Department until the war was over.

She met Don Buxton in Seattle, WA, and they were married on June 22, 1945. Four children were born to this union, a son and three daughters.

After Don's discharge from the U.S. Navy in February, 1946, Don and Pat traveled to Columbus Junction, Iowa, where Don worked as a vocational agriculture teacher and Pat worked in a doctor's office. After three years, Don was able to rent their first farm in Lytton, Iowa. After seven years of renting farms, they bought their own farm in Hazelton, IA and lived there 13 years. Then they moved to a farm northeast of Oelwein. Pat lived there 34 years, a number of years being after Don's death.

Pat was an active church member, playing the organ and piano for services for over 40 years, teaching, and leading Vacation Bible School. She loved a daily cup of coffee, reading her Bible and other Christian materials, and listening to Christian radio programs.

In addition, she played piano. Her family's favorite was "Polly". Her many creative hobbies included photography, oil painting, crewel embroidery, knitting, sewing, refinishing and reupholstering furniture, and gardening. Children, grandchildren and friends were the recipients of her many projects.

After retirement, Don and Pat enjoyed being "Winter Texans," where they owned a mobile home in Weslaco. They enjoyed the weather, many fine friends and activities. Pat cared for Don after he suffered a stroke in 1992 until he passed away on March 23, 1994.

Pat lived at the mobile home park in Oelwein after selling the farmhouse. She cooked a hearty Thanksgiving dinner for her family in November 2007, just days before moving to a daughter's home, and then to a retirement home in Duluth.

Patricia Buxton, 96, of Duluth, Minnesota and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa, passed away Tuesday morning, May 13, 2014 at Benedictine Health Center in Duluth, Minnesota.

A visitation (with family present) was held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 18 at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and after 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Church of Christ Eastside in Oelwein with Rev. Larry Lane officiating.

Interment was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be decided at a later time.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 48 years, Don Buxton; seven brothers-in-law (James Buxton, Claude Buxton, Robert Buxton, Russell Dickinson, Irving Wiltse, Hal Kenner, Bob Fackler) and five sisters-in-law (Winona Dickinson, Gladys Wiltse, Donna Buxton, Virginia Buxton, "Virgie" Buxton); three grandchildren: Jennifer Lyn Norman, Alexander James Norman, and Mitchell Montrose Norman.

Pat is survived by her son, Bruce (Marilynn) Buxton; three daughters: Ann Buxton; Betty (David) Evans; Lyn (Robert) Norman; nine grandchildren: Nina Smith, Ryan Smith, Craig Buxton (Elizabeth), Dale Buxton (fiancée Tina Spanier), Rachel Neubrander (Kerry), Daniel Evans, Angela Johnson (Danny), Jack Norman, Anna Norman; three great-grandsons (Seth Buxton, Ethan Buxton, Grant Buxton); two sisters (Barbara Kenner and Kathleen Fackler), nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to staff members of Benedictine Health Center for their care and attention to Pat's comfort the past few years.

Pat would want everyone to know this message:
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
