Laura was born on December 20, 1953 in Milwaukee, daughter of the late William Guenther and Maribelle (Grovac) Guenther. Laura started teaching at Milwaukee Public Schools in 1990, 11 of those years at Fernwood Montessori School as a Literacy Coach. While she was at Fernwood Montessori she was instrumental in starting programs such as America Reads, Boys and Girls Book Club, Newspaper Club, working with University of Milwaukee in setting up tutors to help students in reading. Laura also assisted teachers in teaching writing. She retired from Milwaukee Public Schools in June 2013. She will be missed by staff members, parents and students.
Survivors include her mother: Maribelle Guenther, Manitowoc; two sisters: Susan Guenther, Libertyville, IL; Carol Guenther, Waubeka, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her father: William Guenther; one brother: Scott William Guenther.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Trinity Alliance Church, 3121 Nagle Avenue, Manitowoc. Pastor Wayne Anderson will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
