Dr. Leo J. Castiglioni

GALVESTON — Dr. Leo J. Castiglioni, 76, of Galveston passed away, Sunday, November 6, 2005, at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2005, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Father Gerry Lewis, officiating. The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Friday, November 11, 2005, at the Carnes Brothers Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. A private entombment will be held at a later date.

Born August 6, 1929, in Galveston, Texas to Peter and Natalina Paganucci Castiglioni, Dr. Cas graduated Valedictorian of the Kirwin High School class of 1946. He attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and the University of Texas, Austin, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. He interned at the John Peter Smith Hospital, Fort Worth, Texas and completed his residency in internal medicine at the US Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans. It was there that he met his future wife Lois Lay, a USPHS dietitian. Additional training included a Gastroenterology Fellowship with Dr. Marcel Patterson at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.

During his career in the Public Health Service, he served in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gallup, New Mexico, San Francisco, California, and Galveston, Texas. Upon retirement from the USPHS in 1977, after 22 years of service, Dr. Cas went into private practice with Dr. Harry Kelso and served as Chairman Department Medicine St. Mary’s Hospital.

He retired from private practice in 1998. Dr. Cas was active in the Galveston County Medical Society for many years, and served as delegate to the Texas Medical Association for over seven years. Recently, he served as treasurer of the UTMB Retirees Association.

Preceded in death by his parents, sister and brothers, Theresa, Aldo and Bruno Castiglioni, survivors include his wife of 46 years, Lois Lay Castiglioni of Galveston; daughter, Kay O’Pella and husband Mark of Houston; son, Donald Jay Castiglioni and wife Elizabeth of Austin; grandchildren, Natalie and Olivia Castiglioni and Kathryn O’Pella; sisters-in-law, Betty Castiglioni of Galveston, Katherine Lay Earnest, Elizabeth Lay Daniel both of Smyrna, Georgia, and Martha Lay Bennett of Kirkville, New York; brother-in-law, James Lay of Calhoun, Georgia; niece, Tami Castiglioni of Galveston; nephews, Dr. Joe Castiglioni of College Station, Randy Castiglioni of Sugarland, Kerry Castiglioni of League City, and Rick Castiglioni of Houston, cousins: Mary Miller of Galveston, and Dante Paganucci of League City.

Honorary pallbearers are the Castiglioni nephews, James Lay, Dr. John McKenna and Dr. Reza Jahadi.
