Deceased Name: Louis Paul DeLaureal

Louis Paul DeLaureal, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, died Monday at Baptist Hospital. He was 76. Lt. Col. DeLaureal was a native of Broussard, La. and lived in New Orleans for 33 years. He graduated from St. Cecelia's High School in Broussard and received his bachelor's degree in pre-medical studies from Louisiana State University in 1938. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 215, Broadmoor Post and the Commissioned Officers Association. He had a long and distinguished military career, starting as a combat medic with the 97th Field Artillery Batallion, which saw extensive action at Corregidor in the Philippines in spring 1942. He also fought in the battle for Guadalcanal in the Pacific and in the North African campaign before serving in France and Italy, where he was stationed when Germany surrendered in May 1945. After the war, he spent time at Ft. Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone as the Army Hospital administrator. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War in 1951; after that war, he was stationed at a post on the CzechEast German border. His final assignment on active duty was as commander of a field hospital at Fort Lewis, Wash. Survivors include his wife, Alice DeLaureal; four sons, Daniel, Patrick, Edward and Louis DeLaureal Jr.; three brothers, Thomas, R. Todd and W. David DeLaureal; three sisters, Celeste Boagni, Margaret Taylor and Marie DeLaureal; and four grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at Bultman Funeral Home, 3338 St. Charles Ave. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery No. 1.
