Frances V. Nichols, 810 Walnut St., Lebanon, died Thursday, June 17, 1993, at home. She had been a first-grade teacher in the Lebanon School district for many years. Born in Philadelphia to the late Robert A. Nichols Jr. and Retta K. Gillin Nichols, she was an honors graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School and earned a bachelor's degree in kindergarten-primary education and a master's degree in kindergarten-elementary supervision from the University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of Pi Lambda Theta, a national honorary fraternity for women in education. She taught at Henry Houck Elementary School before transferring to Southwest Elementary and had been a coperating teacher for student-teacher programs for Millersville State College and Lebanon Valley College. She was the author of D.C. Heath and Co. social studies textbook for first grade, "In School and Out," which was used throughout the United States. She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, the parish Council of Catholic Women, the Alumni Association of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Community Concert Association, Lebanon County Historical Society, Friends of the Lebanon Community Library, Oakview Auxiliary, Lebanon County Flower Club, Friends of the Gallery of LVC, Republican Committee of Lebanon County, the Republican National Committee, and the Myerstown Rotary Club Travel and Adventure Series. Surviving are sisters Valerie M. Nichols and Joan L. Nichols, both of Lebanon, and a brother, the Rev. Joseph E. Nichols, pastor of St. Mary's Church in Baltic, Conn. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert A. Nichols III. (Lebanon Daily News, June 18, 1993)
