Zealous was the son of Paul and Priscilla (nee Towers) Bates. He wed America L. Stewart on June 18, 1862 in El Dorado County, CA. They were the parents of the following: Priscilla Jane, Charley Sherman, Abbie Stewart, Ella Josephine, Nellie May, and Gertrude Annette. In the 1860s, Zealous served as secretary of the Clarksville Quartz Mining Company. Per the 1870 census, he was a school teacher at Petaluma, Sonoma County, while the 1880 census finds him as a saloonkeeper in Monroe, Colusa County.
