US ARMY - WORLD WAR II

ATHENS - James B. Scott Jr., 90, of Athens and Florida, died May 20, 2014, at his home in Athens, with his family by his side. Born in Skowhegan on Oct. 17, 1923, he was the son of Lula (Welch) and James B. Scott Sr. James graduated from Somerset Academy in Athens.


He served in the Army during World War II from Dec. 7, 1941 to Sept. 2, 1945.


He was first married to Dorothy B. (Foss) Scott and then he met his life-long companion, Linea Foss.


He owned and operated Scott's General Store in Athens for many years. He was the Postmaster of the Athens Post Office for 20-plus years. James was a past member of the Civil Air Patrol, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Masonic Keystone Lodge in Solon and a trustee of the Somerset Academy. He loved to fly and obtained his pilot license in 1969, was a licensed amateur radio operator, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping.


He was predeceased by one brother, Elden Scott.


James is survived by his life-long companion, Linea Foss, of Athens; one daughter, Marlene Roach and her husband, William, of Athens; one brother, Bruce Scott and his wife, Barbara, of Winterport; three grandchildren, Scott Roach and his companion, Brenda Turnbull, of Athens, Sonja McSweeney and her husband, Kevin, of Athens, and Shad Roach and his wife, Noelle, of Apex, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jon, Sarah, Amanda Jeanne, Garrett, Colby, Lera and Vitalik; along with several nieces and nephews.


Donations may be made in his memory to MaineGeneral Hospice, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903. The family would like to give a special thanks to MaineGeneral Hospice for all their wonderful care and support of James during his illness.


A graveside service will be at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. (Morning Sentinel 5/22/2014)
