Sybil was born in her aunt's kitchen in Skedee, Oklahoma (no longer incorporated) on April 6, 1930, to Orville and Viola Bacher Russell. She was put into a slightly heated oven for warmth. She was an only child.
Sybil was raised in the southwest, most often in Oklahoma. Her father was an iron worker, and they moved often for his job. She married at 17, had her first child at 18, and finished high school via correspondence courses. She and her former husband, Bob Stumbaugh, and their children moved from Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Colorado in 1957, where she enrolled in Colorado State College in Greeley, finishing three years later with a degree in Elementary Education. She later earned a Master's Degree from the same institution, which had changed names to the University of Northern Colorado.
Sybil taught for a number of years in the Mapleton School District, and later at Niwot Elementary. When she and her former husband, John Irwin, moved to Georgetown, Texas in 1981, she became the Director of the Williamson County Rape Crisis Center, which later included a battered women's shelter. Sybil returned to Colorado 10 years later to be near family.
Left to mourn Sybil are her children, Stanley, Gail and Russell along with six grandchildren, Bryan, Russell, Joanna, Brent, Arianna and Alec as well as two step-granddaughters, Lisa and Jamie. Her great-grandchildren are Zak, Haylee, Raef, Kylie, Ethan, Makayla, Hannah, Cassie, Emery and Colton. She is also survived by a great-great-granddaughter Luna.
The family would like to thank the first floor staff at LifeCare Center, who took wonderful care of Sybil for a number of years.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 28, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel followed by the interment at Foothills Gardens of Memory, north of Longmont on Hwy. 287. Please visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
