For Henry's descendants, he was our first ancestor born in America. He was the second child and first son of Jean Henri/Henry Fortineux who arrived in Philadelphia on August 29, 1730 on the ship Thistle of Glasgow. Henry's father John Henry was born in Otterberg, Germany. Henry was born in Prince George's in what is now Frederick County, MD. He was baptized on September 21, 1740, in Monocacy, MD. At the age of 13 he likely witnessed his father's death by lightning, and was possibly struck as well but survived. As the oldest son, he was then responsible for helping his pregnant mother care for the other children and oversee their sizeable land holdings.

It is believed that Henry married Anne Elizabeth Hathaway (poss. 1780,) and that two children were John (1781 PA) and Henry (1783?). Sometime around 1781-82 he began selling his inherited land to his brothers Daniel and David and 100 acres to his sister. He married his second wife Anna Barbara Pickenpaugh in Frederick County, MD between 1786-1796. He moved to Greene Co., PA in 1781 and then to Monongalia County (W)VA in 1808, and records show he was living in Monongalia County (W)VA in 1813 when he would have been 74. Monongalia County (W)VA borders Greene County, PA. Many details of his life remain uncertain.
