Only son of Elwood O'Neal, former manager of Kraft Foods Plant. Monty was "Most Versatile" at Carroll County High School during his senior year, 3 years on student council, attended International Key Club convention, and president of Senior Class. Played on the Panther Basketball team and was in the band and yearbook staff. Attended Georgetown College two years, and later was a student at the University of Tennessee. Moved with his family to Gallatin, Tennessee. Worked at the JC Penney store at Madison, Tennessee for three years. Trained at Fort Knox and Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Went overseas on Octover 19, 1967 and was stationed at the Mekong Delta when he was killed "while engaging the enemy in fire power in a military aircraft while landing." After memorial services in Gallatin his body was returned to Carrollton for services at the Tandy-Eckler Funeral Home.
