Wellman D. Castle was the son of Isaac Asa Castle and Harriett Dalmatia Wellman. He was the grandson of Asa Castle and Elizabeth "Betsey" Doty who was a descendant of Edward Doty who came to this country on the Mayflower in 1620.
Wellman was married first to Frances A. Ferry in 1845 in Michigan. Frances died in childbirth June 16, 1860 in Amador County, California at their boarding house, Forest Home. She is buried in a family cemetery which is on the property where the boarding house once stood.
